Paola Information and Update

Post submitted by Barbara:
"For my new readers who may not know the story of little Paola and her family this is a brief review. Less than a year ago the touching photo of a 'dirty? sad looking little girl, called Paola touched the hearts of several people and 13/14? of us decided to sponsor her as a group. As outlined recently we had a quick collection to enable Macky to buy the family several useful items and food items during a very rushed visit which not only provided many interesting photos of their first visit to the zoo but also several photos showing the dreadful living conditions of the family. The photos showed a very dark, fly infested room with a dirt floor, a hole in the roof, no water connection and the worst of all the mother, Rosa, was cooking on an open fire in a hallway with three young children running about. It was immediately decided to do a group fundraiser in order to change the family's living conditions. The most urgent was to provide a safer means of cooking so once the funds were raised the family received a small table, a gas cooker and a gas canister? (the open fire is no longer used because they have an actual mini stove!)

Then, an inquiry regarding what could be done about getting the two eldest girls, Paola and her elder sister, Tomasa enrolled in school eventually led to two very generous donations, by anonymous sponsors also touched by the family's poor living conditions. More luck continued when the Mexican Government decided to provide cement floors to the small compound where Paola lives. At the same time repairs were made to the roof, a toilet and water connection was made, and a dangerous well was fenced off with a retaining wall.
Then, just before Christmas another small group fund-raiser was made to provide the family with a wardrobe in which to keep their clothes instead of being kept in boxes on the floor.

The latest photos that were posted on March 11 and can be seen here, show the new wardrobe and the socks, shoes, and flip flops bought with the remaining fund raising amount. There was also enough to start proceedings to get the children enrolled in school and provide the necessary documentation.

Soon, the two sisters will start a new adventure, that is begin school for the first time. Since Rosa is illiterate and may not have been taught any personal hygiene the children are often filthy with uncombed hair and unwashed faces. So, in order to prepare them for their new school experience four of us are doing what we can to get them ready so as not to be embarrassed when they embark on their new school life. Barbara is making up a 'preparing for school' package for practising their ABC's, exercise books and hygiene items like brushes for hair, teeth and nails, a wash cloth and towel, etc., Bernie is looking for some ABC books in Spanish and other school supplies; Mack is putting together a cartoon type 'hygiene for pre-schoolers which will be translated into Spanish by Heather. Hopefully, these items will encourage Rosa to teach her children some necessary hygiene tips so that they won't be embarrassed by other children. This will also give Paola some preschool experience so that she would be less behind than other kids who may have attended nursery or kindergarten.

So, you can see that our group has been kept busy but it is so rewarding to have been able to help this worthy family in such a short time. And, you can be sure that more will follow in due course!!
After all of this good fortune, and in less than one year's time, their family income has gone from $95 a month to $291! Wow!!

Paola's Home Improvements

Our Google Group child, Paola is so loved by all!! Last year, we wanted to set her mother up with a business to bring more income into the home. However, it was determined that a business would not be a good idea because the mother has no schooling. She doesn't know basic math nor how to read and write. Hopefully, there is a program she can get into to learn how to do those basic things at the center. For now, we had to come up with a different way to help. When CI came back with a long list of things that needed to be fixed in the family's home, our group went right to work! The family received a well for clean water, a toilet, a sink, and a new roof! Here is what the field officer wrote on their behalf.

Dear Donor,

Paola is very happy for all that you have done for her and for her family: the well, toilet, washing place, roof. All of that will improve their quality of life greatly. Paola, Tomasa, Mary, and Ms. Rosa thank you for all of the love and attention that you give them. They are happy to know that their are people who worry about those who have less, and that they do something to help them. They say hi and hope that you are fine. May God keep blessing you.

A Letter from Tomasa in Mexico (Paola's Sister)

Do you remember the updated photo of Paola? She had her shirt backwards and inside out, and it looked like she hadn't been groomed. Well, here is Tomasa, looking exactly the same. What is really going on here? Were they sound asleep, and pulled out of bed in the darkness of night?
Here is the letter Tomasa sent to her sponsor Alice:
"Dear Alice,
Hello, I hope you are fine. I am going to tell you about Tomasa. She liked a lot the correspondence, she is very happy to know more about you and of the good will that you have towards her.
Her family thanks you for the details that you sent them with your friend. She liked them a lot and she also hopes to be able to meet you someday. Thank you for the correspondence.
Elizabeth Perez" ( CI field rep)

This is so funny to me!

We will get to the funny part in a minute... Here is the letter sent to Mack for the package she gave to Steve to bring to the girls on his Mexico visit:

Dear Mack and Mike,

Paola, her sisters, and her mother are very happy for the gifts you have sent for them, lollipops, bubble gum, and they liked especially the letter and the photo album because when they looked at it they remembered everything they saw at the zoo and all the good memories and all the good memories from the visit that you did. Paola and her family send many greetings and kisses. They hope you have a pretty Christmas.

Noemi – field officer

Additional Comments: These gifts were delivered by Mr. Steve Hogan in his recent visit. We delivered the gifts on time, but unfortunately the pictures were lost, so we had to take them again; this is the reason the candies are not in the pictures.***

***Ok, I wonder how long it was between the time they delivered the package to when they went back to get the pictures- Since it was candy, I am sure it was gone the day they received it!!! Hilarious!!!!

A Stove & a Table for Paola & Her Family

I received a letter, photos & special needs follow-up report for rhe items we purchased for Paola and her family. This was the first donation, and this is what was purchased:
1. a gas cylinder
2. stove with two burners
3. table
4. gas refill
These are the comments from the special needs report:
*What were the child's/family's comments when the gifts were delivered?
Paola and her family became so happy for the gift they received from the sponsor. They looked very happy when they received the benefits.
*How will the gifts benefit the child and/or family?
Paola received a stove, a cylinder of gas, and a table. In the past, they used to cook in a fire, so it's going to be more healthy and safer to cook in a stove.
*Additional Comments:
The cost of the gas refill increased, so the excedent will be covered by the agency.
Here is the letter from the field officer:
Dear Donor,
Paola and her family are doing fine and they're very happy for the donation you sent them. Everything will be very helpful to improve the living conditions of the family. The gas cylinder and the table are very useful for them. Everyone in the family thank you very much and they hope God keeps blessing you. They send you their best, send you hugs and kisses. Paola loves you very much and she hopes you are doing fine.
Sincerely,
Noemi Enriquez (field officer)

Non-Stop Good News for Paola & Tomasa!!!

I can't believe I am posting this!!! First we had some anonymous donations to help out the girls, and now even more good news!!! The Mexican government just paid to put in a cement floor in their home (as well as the other homes in their neighborhood)!!! That means that the funds that were being used for the floor can now be used for a bathroom!!! Plus, we have had some great group members step up to donate to Paola's fundraiser: http://www.firstgiving.com/groupchild
This will take care of the connect drainage and the extra funds can go to a dresser and helping the girls get their birth certificates... and maybe it will even pay their tuition for the next school year!!! Great news all around!

***Special Note: They will, also, have the additional funds that were raised by our group, so an additional $195 or so (after Firstgiving fees are taken out). Maybe they can buy some food and other household essentials?

Thanks everyone!!!

A Petition for Help for Paola, Tomasa & Family

Some of you have asked how you can help Paola and her family... We did a group donation petition to buy some small things for the family about 2 months ago or so. Some in the group did not get a chance to participate in that round of donations, but now you can help!!! There are only 2 things left on the special needs request from the family - a drain connection and a bathroom. The family is in great need of a place to store their clothes and keep them clean as well. Here is the petition for this new fundraiser:

drain connection $175

chest of drawers/storage for the clothes $100

Total needed: $275

Those of you who were not able to donate before, or those who would like to help again, I will be starting a firstgiving page just for this project. This FirstGiving page is just being set up to help up see how much money has been donated and how much money is still needed. Last time, we just donated directly through Paola's account/PayPal, but it was so much harder to manage. This will make it simpler. Those of you who sponsor Paola/Tomasa and want to help, here is the page:

Exciting News for Paola and her Family!

You may remember the google group child, Paola from previous posts. When Mack visited the family in Mexico a few months ago, it was clear to all of us that the family was living in some of the worst conditions imaginable!!! We decided that we needed to take action, and a request was sent to the field to ask how we could help the family.

A list was given to us of several things that the family was in need of. We started with the stove because the family was using an open fire, which is not safe with small children running around. Several group members gathered our money together, and came up with the funds to buy a stove and gas cylinder.

That still left several items on their list, and with all of the fundraisers going on... Let's just say it can get overwhelming. Then, we received notification that two very generous and anonymous donors had sent $1007.00 to be used on the family!!! This donation will be used to provide them with a floor in their home, which they clearly need. The dirt floor they have now causes everything to be dusty, including their feet, hair, clothes, bed, etc. The rest of the donation will be used to repair the roof, so that the rain does not get into the home.

I don't know who that donor was, but I would like to thank them on behalf of myself, the group, and Paola's family! We are very grateful for your generosity!!!
