Paola's Home Improvements

Our Google Group child, Paola is so loved by all!! Last year, we wanted to set her mother up with a business to bring more income into the home. However, it was determined that a business would not be a good idea because the mother has no schooling. She doesn't know basic math nor how to read and write. Hopefully, there is a program she can get into to learn how to do those basic things at the center. For now, we had to come up with a different way to help. When CI came back with a long list of things that needed to be fixed in the family's home, our group went right to work! The family received a well for clean water, a toilet, a sink, and a new roof! Here is what the field officer wrote on their behalf.

Dear Donor,

Paola is very happy for all that you have done for her and for her family: the well, toilet, washing place, roof. All of that will improve their quality of life greatly. Paola, Tomasa, Mary, and Ms. Rosa thank you for all of the love and attention that you give them. A Letter from Tomasa in Mexico (Paola's Sister)

Do you remember the updated photo of Paola? She had her shirt backwards and inside out, and it looked like she hadn't been groomed. Well, here is Tomasa, looking exactly the same. What is really going on here? Were they sound asleep, and pulled out of bed in the darkness of night?
Here is the letter Tomasa sent to her sponsor Alice:
"Dear Alice,
Hello, I hope you are fine. I am going to tell you about Tomasa. She liked a lot the correspondence, she is very happy to know more about you and of the good will that you have towards her.
Her family thanks you for the details that you sent them with your friend. She liked them a lot and she also hopes to be able to meet you someday. Thank you for the correspondence.

Steve visits with Juan in Mexico

Before his trip to the Philippines, Steve met with a lot of our children in Mexico. Juan was one of those children. This is what Juan wrote regarding Steve's visit:

"Dear Alice,
I really liked the things you sent me with your friend Steve Hogan. I loved the visit, he's a very nice person.
I liked the pictures because I was able to see you and your children. I am doing well in school. My sister is 5 years old and the baby is 6 months old.
I send you hugs and kisses.

And, Juan even wrote a letter directly to Steve! This is what it said:

"Dear Mr. Steve Hogan,
I'm writing you very thankful for the visit and the courtesy you had for me and my family and for giving me news about my spnsor and her gifts. Your visit was very nice because we realized that the sponsors really come and visit us. We hope you can thank my sponsor for me for the gifts you brought me. That we send her kisses and hugs. We hope you can visit us again soon. I send you a warm hug. Sincerely, Juan"

A Stove & a Table for Paola & Her Family

I received a letter, photos & special needs follow-up report for rhe items we purchased for Paola and her family. This was the first donation, and this is what was purchased:

1. a gas cylinder

2. stove with two burners

3. table

4. gas refill

These are the comments from the special needs report:

*What were the child's/family's comments when the gifts were delivered?

Paola and her family became so happy for the gift they received from the sponsor. They looked very happy when they received the benefits.

*How will the gifts benefit the child and/or family?

Paola received a stove, a cylinder of gas, and a table. In the past, they used to cook in a fire, so it's going to be more healthy and safer to cook in a stove.

The cost of the gas refill increased, so the excedent will be covered by the agency.

Eclipse and Sharon's Departure

Hello Everyone,
I want to tell you about my two children that I was sponsoring through Children International. Eclipse was my second sponsored child. I started sponsoring him in August 2006. He was only 5 years old. He is from Lusaka, Zambia. He was such a cutie I fell in love with him as soon as I saw his picture. He lived with his mother, 2 brothers and a little sister named Sharon. In August 2008 I wanted to help out his family even more so I contacted CI and asked them if I could sponsor the rest of the kids in Eclipse's family. CI contacted me and told me that Eclipse's sister was able to be sponsored. The older brother was to old and the other brother was already sponsored. So I started sponsoring Sharon. When I started sponsoring Sharon she was also 5 years old. She had such a beautiful smile. It just lit up your heart to see these to darling children. Just in the past couple of months I found out that Eclipse and Sharon's mom passed away. Their father had already passed when I started sponsoring them. Now that their mother passed they have no one to care for them. Relatives stepped up and took them in. I was so happy to hear that they were not alone to fend for themselves. Today, I received a letter from CI and this is what they had to say.
Dear Ms. Robb,
I know your sponsored children, Eclipse and Sharon, mean a great deal to you, and that you want to be informed about their well-being. So, today I'm writing you about some important changes happening in their lives.
Our field office staff reported that since Eclipse and Sharon's mother passed away the kids were left without a caretaker. They recently moved in with relatives who live in a community that is outside of our project area.
Unfortunately, this means they can no longer be a part of the program. I know how upsetting this news must be, but I know to assure you that this move was in the best interest of the children at this sad time in their lives.

It breaks my heart that they have lost both of their parents and then losing their sponsorship. It must be devastating to them right now. I wish I could just hug them and assure them that things will work out for the best. I will miss them deeply. I will miss their beaming smiles the most. As of right now I am not going to sponsor any more children other then what I have now. I have seven more sponsored children and I am going to put my energy into making their lives more productive and happy. Thank you for listening to my goodbye story. Dee & I bought subscriptions, so we will get funds for our own fundraisers as well. However, Dee & I did not win a movie ticket because we bought the magazines ourselves... Maybe I should have sent myself an e-mail to another personal e-mail account and then, ordered that way...

Now, it gets better... If you send e-mails to TONS of people and have several people get subscriptions, you could win $200 for yourself you use however you'd like! Not only will the fundraisers (whichever ones you determine you want the money to go to) get lots of money from the sales of the subscriptions, but you will make money, too!

So, that is the list of my new Ugandan kids. I am anxious to get to know them. Since this school is a grass roots organization/school and not some huge international non-profit, it is can not do things on the level of a big organization. For example, we are all only paying $3 a month for sponsorship per child, so we can't expect weekly letters (obviously). The school is running on very limited funds. However, I don't think monthly or bi-monthly letters should be out of the question, especially if the school gets someone to take care of the postage fees for them.

Kate has stated that they can now guarentee 3 photos per child per year because Hellen now has a camera with which to take photos. However, there are exceptions to the 3 photos rule, which I will get to in another post.

Kate will be visiting the school next summer for 2 months. At that time, we should receive lots of photos and updates. We can, also, send items for the children through her if we want.

***On another note- I know you can't tell this, but I have very limited internet access right now. I have to travel to a wi-fi spot to pick up a connection, and can only be in that spot for an hour or so before I have to hop back home. The amazing thing is how much I can get done in a short amount of time without kids crawling on my back or husbands (I only have one, I guess that shouldn't be plural- LOL!!) interrupting my train of thought...

Don't forget about the Magazine Fundraiser!

If you are wanting a magazine, don't forget to use the link in the upper right hand corner of this blog. September was the first month for the fundraiser, and we have raised almost $69!!! The check should be coming in the mail shortly, and when it does, here are how the funds will be disbursed:
$15.60 will go to Dee's fundraiser that is coming up (for magazines that Dee bought)
$13.60 will go to Heather's fundraiser for Jonathan (for magazines that Heather bought)
$39.60 will be evenly distrubuted to the fundraisers going on at the time the check arrives (for magazines that Barney bought-someone that Alice e-mailed the link to- unless Alice has a specific fundraiser she wants to put it toward)

Grand total for September= $68.80!!!

I have had a couple of people say that they can get the magazines for a few dollars cheaper somewhere else. In some cases that is true. When you take into account that about 40% of the price goes to our fundraisers, it is worth paying a couple extra dollars to me. For example, the magazine subscription I bout was $34. I think I may have seen it on another site for $30... BUT, out of the $34, Jonathan will get $13.60!!! That is money will spent to me since I wanted the magazine anyway, and every little bit helps the fundraisers get completed.

Now, with the holidays coming up, why not consider sending a magazine subscription to the people on your list? It is a gift they can enjoy all year long!!! I plan to get my neices and nephew some of the children's magazines. "High Five" is a magazine that my girls get, and they LOVE it!! It has stories, games, crafts, etc. You can find a magazine that fits everyone on your list, and the profit will go to your fundriaser or whichever fundraiser you would like it to go to!

I Know the task can seem DAUNTING

Do you feel like what you are doing is not making a difference? Right now, especially during these slow fundraising months, it can be hard to remember that we have already done so much!! Funds are only trickling in for our projects, as opposed to the flood of money we had just a few months ago.
This post is to keep you from feeling down about these slow months. REMEMBER, we have already helped 13 children and their families with our previous projects, and we did it all in a span of 5 months!!! That is incredible!!
August is the slowest month for contributions of all of the months of the year. Right now it seems even worse because the projects we are trying to fund are larger than the previous ones. Luckily, we are halfway through August, and contributions will get even better as we approach the holiday season.
For now, we just have to do the best we can with what we have, and remember that we have done a lot already. There are children out there sleeping on beds that we purchased; children who are healthier because of nutritional supplements we provided; children that have clothes on their backs because of us; children's parents who now will be able to better provide for their children because we have provided them with a business of their own that they would never have been able to afford had it not been for us... I just want everyone to see that even if you only were able to donate a few dollars, it DID make a difference!!!
These are the 2 current projects that are in need of donations to complete. I hope we can complete these this month, so that the families will get the money in September. I can't speak for everyone, but I currently find myself in a VERY tight financial spot! Donate what you can, when you can, and little by little, penny by penny, we WILL make a difference!! On my next pay day, which is still a week away, I plan to add a few more dollars to the fundraisers. I know it won't be much, but I know $5 or $10 less in my pocket (or to my bills) will have a much bigger impact on the familes that we help than it will in my wallet... Of course, I am not condoning debt. I do think that we can all find ways to pinch a penny or two :0)
If any one would like to submit any of their new and exciting ways to pinch pennies for the benefit of our children, shoot me an e-mail. Once I get several ideas, I will post them here with the submitter's name.
Don't forget these children who have a chance to get their projects funded this month! If we can raise the money needed for them by August 31st, they will get the funds for their projects at the end of September!!

I, also, wanted to update everyone on the success of finding sponsors. My blog readers are the BEST! I like featuring children on the blog for others because then, I get to see the children grow through pictures and letters as their sponsors send me the updates. There is another child that got a sponsor through the blog, but I don't have his picture. After the special needs feature last year, my sister-in-law decided she could take a child. She asked me to find her a child with a cranial-facial disorder. I contacted Ashley at CI (The same rep who hooked me up with the other children with special needs) and she gave my sister-in-law a filipino child named Feliciano.

Flora's Special Needs Gift~ Febraury

Alice was able to send Flora the first special needs donation from our group efforts in February. With the money, Flora was able to purchase:

2 big containers of Nido (nutrional drink)
5 bags of Incaparina (nutrional drink)
2 cans of a liquid supplement similar to Pediasure
1 box of syrup
2 packs of diapers
and a metal frame bed!

In case you don't recognize Flora, she was one of the children in the Blog Action Day slide show. She has spina bifida, and therefore requires the extra items that are listed in her special needs purchases.
