Christmas Visit Between Mack & Barbara

In a previous article last year you may have read about CI and ChildHope Zambia sponsors Macky and her Mum, Carolanne (who made the lovely quilt for Macky's recent raffle), from Washington State and Barbara from Vancouver, Canada meeting in Vancouver for an Halloween visit.. This Xmas they visited again this time for two days with Macky's grand-mother, Dorothy, a spry 80 year old in order to take in the sights and lights of Chrismas in Vancouver. We had great plans for a carol cruise, the Bright Nights in Stanley Park and several other sites.

 Unfortunately, since everything was booked ahead with so many other prospective visitors all descending on the same sites we could not get tickets for the 'children's Xmas train ride' until nine p.m. but we filled in the time taking several photos of the many beautiful lighted Xmas scenes. Since both Macky and I have two little boys in Zambia we tried to find appropriate photos to take which wasn't hard to do since there was such a variety. Because two of the proposed raffle prizes, the Grinch and his dog Max, were not claimed we were going to send the Grinch to Macky's sponsored boy, Fanwell and his dog Max to my child, Maxwell. So, naturally when we saw the Grinch in lights we had to have our photo taken with him to send to our boys. We also took other photos to show them how Christmas is celebrated in the West and also the igloo to teach them about the Eskimos and penguins.

After filling our stomachs at a well-known chinese restaurant we returned to Stanley Park to take our turn on the Xmas train.. We had thought there there might be fewer people for the last rides but, boy we wrong!! There were literally thousands of people all hoping to get on the last rides and mostly adults like ourselves. We had to wait in line for almost two hours with Dorothy and I frozen to a park bench under a blanket until Macky and Carolanne made the front of the line. It was a lot of fun on the train with the music, some brave people singing carols and the many lights and scenes set amongst the forest portion of the park. My Preschool Twins

Are these not the cutest little 4 year olds you have ever seen!? Elizabeth and Margret stole my heart the minute I saw them. I had already been looking at sponsoring siblings, and twins is always a good option. In fact, we have several sets of twins in the CHZ program. I was just introduced to these little ones this morning. They will be 5 years old in December. I am sure they will be excited to learn they will be able to go to preschool and get a pair of shoes, school supplies, book bag, etc. In 2 years, they will be able to start primary school, but until then, they can learn a lot at the early education center established by Child Hope Zambia.

Now, the deal was I would sponsor one child for every 7 children that were sponsored by others (for a max of ten children). I was up to 9 children already because sponsors had been found for 63 children in less than two months! Now, we are up to above 70, so I am supposed to take on my one last child. However, I just could take one of the girls and not the other! Plus, I took on a sibling of one of my other children when I had intended to focus on the girls, so I took on another 1st grader as well. That brings me to a grand total of 12. We have close to 90 children sponsored now, and the program has only been around for 2 1/2 months!

Meet Dorice- My 1st Grader!

So many children sponsored through CHZ that it was my turn to sponsor another child!! Since I already have 6 boys in the program and only 1 girl, I decided to choose another girl. This is Dorice. She is in the 1st grade. I am waiting for the rest of her bio from Zambia. For now, those are the only two things I know- here name and the grade she is in. She just looks so small to be carrying a backpack!

Hi, all!!! I know I have kind of disappeared from my blog duties which is very odd behavior for me. I am still here, but I have been working very hard on everything Child Hope Zambia related. The reason for this is that there are so many children who may not live to see tomorrow without some help. That makes it very hard for me to sleep and hard for me to focus on anything bu them. I guess it is because I see it so directly, instead of from a distance (as I did with CI).

The sponsorship program has launched full force, and there are so many exciting things happening that the sponsors will see soon. Since I don't know if the helpers want to have their names out there, I will keep them anonymous, but I still want to tell you what they have been up to:

1. One person has worked on a spreadsheet that allows us to search by birthday, town, grade, etc. This will make looking for a specific child according to the sponsor's preference VERY easy.

2. That same person has provided details on a merge system that will make sending child letters to the sponsors and any other correspondence super easy!

3. Another person has applied that merge system to give me envelope templates and a child report template!

4. Someone has provided us with a web-site that they are adding items to to get it up and running within a few weeks. Some of the great functions that are expected to happen are tabs for each child that will link to all of the photos and videos that child is in!!

5. Another person has put together letter templates that will be used this year for the children to write to their sponsors. There is a template for every age group and gender, and all 4 seasons!!! (that is 24 templates for this year alone!)

As you can see, I have a great group of folks helping in many ways. There are still others doing other things such as sending items for the children, making items for the children, and offering to help in whichever capacity is needed.

Since this is such a new program, I know it is hard for every one to know exactly what to expect from it. However, you have already seen a great program this past year will all that the Make a Change group has done- This is just another arm of the same group. This is our sponsorship program! A child sponsorship program set up with the sponsor in mind!!

The children are scheduled to write at the least 4 times a year! The first time they will be writing is this coming month- the month of June! Even the children that can not write have some great letter templates that will allow you to get to know them. The Zambia team will help all of those that can't write with their letter writing.

Along with the letter writing coming up in a few weeks, there will, also, be an all out photo shoot! The children sponsored in May get their uniforms in June, so they will be photographed with those. Any child who has received a package will be photographed with their package as well.

I wanted to feature one extended family all in one post. The benefit of doing this is that you can see who is living with whom, and can sponsor children in the same family, or even share a family with a friend. A lot of the children live with relatives, but that is all completely normal in Zambian life. The family is not just the mother father and children. The family includes cousins, uncles, aunts, grandparents, etc. It is interesting to note that in most cases, they do not differentiate between cousin and sibling/ father and uncle/ mother and aunt.
